Pupils from one of the feeder schools for the new Lossiemouth High School have won a national “Big Build” competition
Primary 3 pupils at St Gerardine school in Lossiemouth are celebrating after winning a UK competition run by the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS).
The school is a feeder primary for the new £42 million Lossiemouth High School, which is being delivered by hub North Scotland on behalf of Moray Council and is currently under construction by main contractor Balfour Beatty.
As part of the community benefits for the project, Balfour Beatty has been working with the feeder primary schools to outline what the new high school will be like and explain what is involved in building it.
Community benefits advisor John Cairns helped the 44 pupils in primary 3 at St Gerardine primary enter the CCS Big Build competition, which is open to community groups in the UK and Ireland to design and build a structure from recyclable materials.
The pupils chose to build a model of the neighbouring St Gerardine’s High Church, which occupies a landmark position overlooking the rest of Lossiemouth.
They replicated the building’s distinctive red roof by reusing empty crisp packets with lollipop sticks for the doors and windows and copied the harling on the walls by mixing sand and white paint.
Their entry was the only Scottish winner in the competition and our photographs show the delighted youngsters with their winning entry and prize certificates, along with John and class teachers Fiona Trotman and Evelyn Innes.
